A real live crowdsourcing example

The internet has made many, many wonderful things possible. Yay technology.

One of these things is a concept we call crowd sourcing or crowd sharing, etc. Robust user-friendly templates allow users all over the world to begin a fundraising campaign literally in minutes.

Let me show you exactly what I mean. Sharon Sullivan is a professor in Washburn's Theatre department. She has a passion for helping empower all kinds of people. One of her heart causes happens to be families who have found themselves battling domestic violence.

She has a goal to reach $1,000 for her cause through a website called CrowdRise. Others exist such as GoFundMe, etc. She set up her page and then reached out to her friends through email and Facebook.

As an assignment, please share another way crowdsourcing is used by COMMENTING on this post. (Things other than fundraising.) Please limit your answer to one thing because I want everyone to find something different. The sooner you do it, the less creative you will need to be.

  1. One example of crowdsourcing is in terms of collaborating on projects. An example of this would be what is known as "Zooniverse", which is an online "people-powered research" science site. Zooniverse features dozens of projects that volunteers can participate in via crowdsourcing scientific research. It relies on active volunteers to come together and fulfill the projects.

Zooniverse's website is linked here: https://www.zooniverse.org/

  2. Another example would be Indiegogo. It has a very similar layout to kickstarter. Even if you don't reach your funding goal you can still take the amount you were able to raise but, Indiegogo charges a higher fee to do this.

  3. An examples would be Dell's social innovation challenge. Dell challenged students to work together to come up with world changing idea's. Students just have to go to www.Dellchallenge.org and can post their own idea's and vote for other's idea's.

  4. An example of crowdsourcing is Lays potato chip do us a flavor competition. Lays asked consumers to submit ideas for new chip flavors. Whoever submits the best flavor idea receives $1 million dollars or if your flavor is chosen you get 1 percent of the net sales. People were allowed to vote on flavors and the most popular flavors were created and sold in stores

  5. An example of crowdsourcing would be General Mills Worldwide Innovation Network (G-WIN). The large corporation uses crowdsourcing to seek ideas to help improve many areas of its business. Like for ingredients, packaging, all the way to new products and technology suggestions. Anyone can make suggestions to General Mills on its website.

  6. Uber is a good example of crowdsourcing. People are hired to give people rides by Uber, rather than Uber actually having its own line of drivers

  7. My Starbucks Idea is a site where Starbucks customers are able to comment their ideas, complaints, and requests for future drinks and food. It is a place that the company can look at for lots of new ideas for the future, and their advantage is they don't have to work hard to figure out what their customers want. The customers have already told them.

  8. One example of crowdsourcing is Lego. Users can design new products and test the demand. Other users get to vote for this success. The most successful goes to production and the winner receives 1% royalty on the net revenue.

  9. An example of crowd sourcing is Wikipedia. This is a website that people can all add to whenever and however they would like. Even if the facts aren't right, but you can still attach a work cited page.

  10. One example of crowdsourcing is local swap and shops on Facebook. It is like an online garage sale. People can put up items that they don't want or need anymore and it will spread like wild fire on Facebook. Whoever puts up the money first will get the item.

  11. An example of crowdsourcing is Lay's 'Do Us A Flavor' campaign. People can create their own flavors for the chips and submit their idea. Your idea could possibly be created if enough people like it. They've done this a few times and I'm sure they will continue to do it in the future.

  12. An example of crowdsourcing would be Patreon. Users can share what they plan to work on, project wise, and two things can happen: other users can support them (and vice versa), and non-Patreon users can fund a Patreon user and become a Patron. Project get funded and supported by other project creators, as well as fans of the creator.
