Should books be adapted into movies and TV shows?

Image
Since the beginning of the film industry, books have been adapted on to the big screen. In the past few years, this practice has become increasingly popular. While some look down upon this, saying that the books are meant for personal interpretation rather than actors making the characters their own, others love the idea of a new interpretation of the same material. Some of the most popular movie adaptations are based on young adult novels such as "Harry Potter," "The Hunger Games," and "Twilight." As an avid reader myself I look forward to seeing my favorite books adapted into movies, however, it is very easy for the stories to get lost in translation. Books allow a story to be detailed and complex and develop slowly, which makes it difficult for a screenwriter to include every last detail. I am a strong believer that books are ALWAYS better than the movies but the film and entertainment industry is a big part of our society and culture, and it’s

Professionalism: The Babies

Nothing can be done about the days that have come before us, and the future's not ours to control just yet, but we can set ourselves up in the position one day. The value of anything is its next. That is why we treat the youth as such a virtue. A virtue that in many cases can be overlooked or simply abused. Telling young children the same thing there parents are told. All the things they can't do, can’t be and can’t appear as. How its instilled into their brains every image has a certain action. The young boy with locks will likely sale drugs, or the young girl with a double piercing looks fast and will likely rely on some man. When it doesn’t begin that way whatsoever, instead just a style a young child are attracted to. Society's adults are the ones who instill this standard, from a pseudo defined idea of professional

Professionalism: Clothing

Credit: SU Exclusive, Stock Vector When it comes to professionalism people like to believe it has more to do with the action of one, rather than the appearance of the same. That being so, it's not always true, and often within many corporations, businesses, and company’s it's not the case at all. Many owners, or those simply in charge may underestimate an individual by the clothes that they wear. Obviously people must be held to a standard. You can’t have an employee coming to work with the same clothes that they have worn 4 days in a row without washing. Not so much for how unfashionable it is, but rather how unsanitary this may become. That is a safety issue which is very understandable, and should be enforced. The issue im speaking on is that of one’s cleanliness, but how it can be assumed one’s productivity will lessen because they don’t wear a turtleneck instead of a tie to their profession. When the reality of it is, they work at a call office where they will neve

Professionalism: Intro

Image
Professionalism in the workplace has always been an expectation. Regardless of your place of work. Whether you are working at a fast food chain restaurant, a young child who goes to school everyday against your own will, or a highly educated individual who makes a commute everyday to work in a skyscraper located in downtown New York with the highest level of stock brokers known to the nation. There is an expectation that people must be held to, for the business to run, the burgers to be sold, and the students to learn. This is something most if not all of us can agree on. Where the trouble comes to place is how that expectation is upheld, and enforced. Those who tend to be in power- typically older aged white men- are the ones who have created the expectation for professionalism. An expectation that tends to focus more on appearance than the actual action of the employees present within the corporation. Which all in all begins to show the true values of those in charge.  Creator

by Christian Clark So you've marketed your product and you have sales. Now let's get to the easiest part of the whole dropshipping process which is fulfilling the orders. Although this is the simplest part of the process, it can be the most tedious. I like using Shopify because they provide ways for you to work more efficiently. With Oberlo, an add-on application on the Shopify platform, you're able to fulfill your orders by just the click of a button.

Applying For a Credit Card

Image
Photo Credit: Delainey Williams via Credit Karma Applying for a new credit card is a huge responsibility to take on. Especially if it is your first time applying for one. Here are some tips for going and applying for your first big item!:    Check your credit score! What you will be qualified for, all depends on your credit. I recommend Credit Karma because it's free and it gives you recommendations for products that could help you. Knowing your credit score and understanding it, is the very first thing you need to do before applying for any new accounts. Most credit cards companies will have a minimum credit score (usually between 650 and 750) so it is a good idea to be familiar with yours. In addition, it might reveal things you didn’t know, like if you had any medical collections for example.    Determine what you want out of your card. There are many different types out there from rewards cards, cards you use for airline miles, store cards such as Victoria Secret

Managing Your Finances

Photo Credit: Jeff Williams Hello everyone, my name is  Delainey  Williams and I will be writing a  5 part  blog series on managing your finances. I have worked in a bank since May 2016, and I am currently a loan officer at Capitol Federal Savings. Over the last few years, I have gained a lot of hands on experience helping customers manage their finances and prepare for the future. I have learned a lot of the “what not to do” with your money as well. T hese things combined helps make me the perfect person to blog about this topic.  I am going to cover several different topics in my blog posts including creating a budget, applying for a credit card, and opening a new bank account. T hese topics are honestly important to be knowledgeable at any adult age, not just as a student.

How to Fantasy Football: The playoffs

by Zac Schmelzle Throughout this blog we have been leading up to the playoffs, the most important part of the season. Here is where you battle through the bracket of teams to win the championship, and the seeding is based on records of each team. Unlike the NFL playoffs, the fantasy football playoffs generally start at week 14 or 15 depending on the size of the league. During this time no trades and waivers can be claimed. Your team now is the team you ride with. In most leagues, the playoffs will determine the draft order for the next year. If you feel like your team is bad, then your best bet may be to tank the playoffs for a top pick next year. If not, then shooting for the gold will always get you credit from your league. We have gone over the most basic of parts when it comes to fantasy football, and hopefully, this helps you to succeed in your first fantasy football year and the many that will come after. How to draft, and how to play the waiver wire as well as ho

How to Fantasy Football: The draft

Image
by Zac Schmelzle To start fantasy football, the league commissioner will set a time and date for the draft. The draft is where members of the league will draft NFL players onto their team, and has a few different formats. Snake drafts are the most common, as the draft order will be 1-6, then next round 6-1, and so on so forth until the end of the draft. Standard order has the draft order each round stay 1-6. On the internet, you will find hundreds of draft boards and mock drafts for fantasy football. Those will be members' best bet when learning who to draft and where to draft. Fantasy football is quite different from an actual NFL draft because in fantasy you won't always be drafting the best players. In fantasy, you want NFL players that can fill the stat sheet, or have major volume on their team. An easy rule of thumb to start off with, defenses and kickers can be put off for the latter rounds of your draft. In the draft, you want to be able to predict where players wi

How to Fantasy Football: What is fantasy football?

Image
by Zac Schmelzle I have been a part of fantasy football for only a small three years, but it has become quite the holiday for my friends, family, and I. Every football season is one to celebrate, but the sport of fantasy football has made it more interactive than betting. What fantasy football is may be a tough concept for newcomers due to all the separate parts involved, but this blog is meant to be an introduction to the sport, how it works, and how to be good at it. Fantasy football is a game where you are able to set up a draft and select your favorite players, where their individual stats every week determine your own team's success that week. Their stats determine their score, this means players give your team points for things like passing, receiving, and rushing yards, as well as scoring touchdowns. Even defenses give your team points for points allowed, interceptions, and sacks. Fantasy has many different kinds of league formats, but the ones used mainly are standard

Stand up for Trees

Image
I call each one of you who will look at this final blog post and reflect upon the importance I put into tree planting. This is not a fantastical tale like Treebeard from The Lord of the Rings, it is much more serious. Like the trees in that movie series were cut down for selfish purposes in Middle-Earth, so are the trees on Earth in reality are cut down at a faster rate than when we can plant. I am not asking for superheroes, tree huggers, or bioterrorists. No I am asking you to take a look at the neighborhood and wonder if there is a need for trees. If you believe so grab a friend or two, devise a plan, take that plan to your local Home Depot, get some lawn care products, and get to planting a tree. One tree can save a neighborhood, imagine what ten different kinds of trees planted in barren locations and underdeveloped communities could do. Then when those trees are growing and producing fruit you can go to a different part of your hometown and start a tree planting movement. It star

An experience with tree planting

Image
Going over my Grandmother's house was a daily ritual as a child in elementary school. Living on the eastside of Topeka, you might think at times you are in a different city compared to the west of town. Reason being that the neighborhoods do not give off a vibe of being well kept especially as a young person. Growing up I watched the seasons change and outside my grandmother's house after school, her lawn was the best kept; thanks to my Dad's work. Anyhow, the one thing that the neighborhood was missing was trees. Not saying there were not any trees because there were. But these trees were old and did not bear fruit, mangled branches and rotted tree bark. One day I come from school, and grandmother and I had a deep conversation about the Garden of Eden. What really struck me is that she said that if Adam and Eve had obeyed God, who knows what would of become of mankind. So with that I asked why don't we plant a little "garden of Eden" for the neighborhood. Tha

Why We should plant trees

Media Essentials: The correct tool for editing video photo by Jason Morrison This is the tool I initially wanted to use on my video editing over the weekend after I got behind on my assignments and downloaded a trojan on my computer. But the first tool we pick up is not always the best. After I decided to cut my video file in pieces, rather than hack at my laptop, I remembered that there is an included video editor on Windows 10. I used it to link a string of video clips together to make my music video last year: Mazes The music is my own. It is a blend of different electronic sounds in the spirit of glitch, industrial and dubstep, but with a "huh?" factor. In my next post, I will show a tutorial on how to use the trim and split functions in Windows Video Editor.

Eco-Friendly Tree Planting

Image
By Jarin Downing  Graphic by Jarin Downing In these blog posts I will be explaining the best ways to plant trees in your neighborhood. Tree planting is one of the oldest practices humans participate in, because the planting sees direct results if done correctly. People plant trees directly and indirectly. Either by seed displacement when the seed is caught on your person and it drops on the ground or someone takes a specific type of seedling, plants in their front yard purposefully. The reason I chose this topic is because I have been taught to respect the natural world around by my parents. The trees that are in and around my home provide shade, homes for animals, oxygen for the air, and so much more. Without the trees the Earth would become less habitable for humans and other living creatures we take for granted. This blog series will discuss the easiest and best ways to plant trees in your environment.

Dropshipping Using Shopify: How To Get Traffic

Image
by Christian Clark In this post, I'll be showing you how to drive traffic to your online store using Twitter. Twitter is a great social media platform to market on because of the interaction of the users. First, you to need find some accounts with big followings of people you think would be interested in your product. Meme accounts tend to be good for most general trending products. Once you've done that, you want to message them and ask what their promotion rates are. Promotion rates can range from $20-$100, depending on the amount of followers the page has. Once you pay, they will promote your product for you on there page. You will start to see traffic driven to your store from their page, bringing in potential buyers. Here's a sample message I use when looking for promotions.

Media Essentials: Podcast Example photo by Jason Morrison A friend and I decided we would practice how to make a podcast. I set the phone down in front of us and pushed record. As soon as the recording started, we didn't know what to say, but I kept recording and improvised. I had topics written down, but it isn't as easy to say what you have in mind in a way that sounds good in the end. Keep in mind, the better you sound the less editing you will have to do. Try and keep your voices at the same volume and your speaking at an even speed. Most people speed up and slow down, and get quiet and loud within the same few sentences. We have "ums" and "ahs" and "sorta likes" and many others. This can turn your editing into a nightmare, with no sleep before the next school day, and you falling off the stool in photography class. (been there done that). Here is an example of the editing nightmare. I spent hours trying to make sense of the topic, fix t

Media Essentials: How to make a podcast photo by Jason Morrison I made my first podcast in the summer of 2019 for a final project in a psychology class. I haven't made many since then, but I know the basics of how to record audio. One way to get ideas is to listen to podcasts already published. https://www.podbean.com/ What I learned by doing that is: anything goes! So, find out the guidelines specific to your assignment, and you will be in great shape. Use what you have for a microphone, whether it's your phone or an external mic. What can be daunting is the editing, but there are good free programs to use. AudioLab AudioLab  is a great Android app for editing audio. Use whatever you can find. Keep it simple and do the best you can.

Media Essentials: Intro by Jason Morrison photo by Jason Morrison As students, we have a lot on our plate. We have many assignments to complete in many formats using different types of media. It can be overwhelming, especially if we get behind. I have had to scramble to learn things on the fly, things such as: how to make a podcast, how to edit a video, even how to write an essay. I don't know it all, and can't fit it all in this blog, but I can begin to address these needs. It will only solidify what I've learned so far, and hopefully burn it in my brain, so I don't forget! Oh, yeah...and maybe I will help someone in the process.

What did we learn from the Assassination?

Image
So what did we learn from the assassination of John F. Kennedy. We learned that not only did this event give the media a different idea on what kind of events they can cover, but it also gave the media the need to cover everything. According to usnews.com article, "How JFK's Assassination Changed TV Forever," we also learned that this was, "The moment when the television generation came to age." Take a moment and think, their were very few television stations back in 1963, their were also not very many TV's. This moment of one of the first moments that brought the public tv industry together to broadcast the same thing to let Americans know what had happened. We learned that television did something that people thought was impossible. If that specific crisis happened today, imagine how fast in would be covered and put on tv, and how viral the media will go, and how viral the world will go.

What The Assassination Provided Us

Image
The assassination of John F. Kennedy has given people inspiration and brand new idea to the people of the United States of America. It has also gave the television industry a lot of credit for filming this event. Without this event being filmed, media would not be what it is right now. According to Don Cheadle this moment was "The moment when the television generation came to age." Not only did Kennedy's assassination reach out the Americans very quickly, it also created several parts in tv shows and movies such as the Zapruder film.  According to the same article, Robert Thompson, a professor of pop culture and television at Syracuse University said, "While we didn't see the assassination live, the television show about the assassination was a four-day long drama that played on national television. The Zapruder film was a film of the motorcade that JFK was riding when he was shot.

Dropshipping Using Shopify: What is it?

Image
by Christian Clark As a college student athlete, my schedule doesn't give me the opportunity to have a job so instead I have to find other ways to make money instead of exchanging my time for it. Dropshipping utilizing an e-commerce software called Shopify is a way of making money that I've found that fits my schedule by me just doing a little bit everyday. Dropshipping is the process of selling a product from a manufacturer straight to the retailer and selling it through your website, skipping the usual distribution channels. The most common way to do this is by finding a product from china and selling it at a higher price, making money on the difference. I will go over the basics of dropshipping like how to find a product, how to market that product, and how to fulfill orders. First, you'll need a website and a domain, you can do this through  Shopify. Once you have your website set up, you can proceed to looking for a product. I will go over how to find a product in

How the JFK Assassination Changed Media Coverage

Image
On November 22, 1963, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was riding in a motorcade after a Campaign visit in Dallas. The motorcade later was turning the Texas School Book Depository, when all of the sudden shots were fired at his head and neck. Right after he was shot the motorcade tried to race to the hospital to save his life, but it was too late. Kennedy had been shot and killed.   People who lived on this day and were present when the event happened, still and will forever remember what our country was going through when it happened and right after it happened. This moment will forever be remembered by a generation of Americans. This moment had a huge impact on politics and on our American culture.   However, this assassination did not just have a huge impact on politics and American culture, it also changed the media coverage. According to reuters.com article “How the JFK Assassination transformed media coverage,” Paul Ruhle, a senior manager of exhibits at the Newseum i

Facebook and appointments for business.

Businesses on Facebook have a very cool feature built in. Facebook can track appointments on a calendar that the business can view, print, and make changes to. This makes communicating and managing customer appointments quick and easy. Image by gregtosi.com Managing appointments through your business can be tough. It also can be stressful with all your different services you may offer. With Facebook, any company can make a list of all their services. The services are complete with a list of prices, times available, and a description of the service so the client knows exactly what to expect. All the client needs to do is select the service and hit "book". The business can view and make changes as necessary.

"Pages" is a new Facebook application that allows page owners to manage their pages. This makes it very simple for people using Facebook for business. It removes all the other parts of Facebook except what is related to your business page. You can answer messages, view notifications, and look at analytics all solely related to your business page. Photo courtesy of apps.apple.com Facebook has done a great job at making it so simple to manage your business. The pages app is easier for people to manage their customers and page. It may be hard to keep up with notifications and it is also tough to navigate on the normal Facebook app. I recommend the "Pages" app for smart phone to any Photo courtesy of marketingland.com small business or page owner.

Glossier Case Study: Summary

Image
by Lauryn Massey Looking back on my Glossier case study, I learned a lot, and I think there is a lot to be learned from the brand themselves. I chose Glossier specifically as a brand to look at because they became so successful off of social media. Since my major's concentration is creative advertising, I thought they would be a fun brand to focus on. Online based advertising and social media is the new thing. Glossier completely built their brand using Instagram. Influencer based marketing, social media advertisements, and targeting young audiences is the key to building a brand online. It's amazing that everything now is online. Stores are closing because shopping is moving online. DVDs are going away because of online downloads and streaming services. The world is becoming even more advanced with technology, and it's only going to progress more. The sooner companies adapt to technology, the more successful they will be going forward. I learned a lot just by focusing on

Facebook and advertising

Facebook makes it very easy for small businesses to advertise. Advertisements can be any form of media the company or brand wants to promote. You can promote services, photos, videos, links, and products.  Photo courtesy of sproutsocial With over 700 million users on Facebook everyday, advertising is very quick to reach people. A small company can reach out to thousands of interested demographics instantly. This makes Facebook a valuable asset to companies.   Photo courtesy of sourcelinemedia Targeting a specific demographic is valuable for advertisers because it makes for more cost-effective advertisements. When you can pin-point somebody that may already be interested in your product then they are more likely to click on your product. Mobile advertising to a specific advertisement is revolutionary for marketing.

Glossier Case Study: The "Feeling Like Glossier" Campaign

by Lauryn Massey One way that Glossier has successful advertising is through their campaigns. Their most recent campaign, named "Feeling Like Glossier" focuses on real life people. Plus, instead of only being found online, this campaign also has a commercial on television through a partnership with ABC, and will be featured in their brick and mortar store in NYC. Glossier aims to empower people in this new campaign. The campaign features seven people, all whom Glossier has had a relationship with in the past. Some are customers, some are employees, and other past models who worked for them. Glossier is attempting to send the message that the company is not only about how it makes you look differently, but how it makes you feel. This campaign is about makeup being more than just makeup. By relating to everyday consumers, and spreading onto television, Glossier is sure to increase their sales and find new customers. Video taken from YouTube, created by Glossier as part o
