Many believe that China attempted to cover up the virus from the moment it started to until now. Mid-November 2019, the coronavirus made its first jump to a human in Wuhan, China. In December, China then realized the virus had arisen from a local live animal market. On New Year’s Eve, the market was shut down and they claim there wasn’t any evidence of human to human infection, which wasn’t true. They thought once they closed the market, the virus would be gone. Did they know different at that time? Absolutely. They were seeing cases coming into the hospitals that had nothing to do with the market. A few weeks later the NCAA voted to allow spring semester seniors to keep their eligibility . However, this was not the case for the fall/winter semester seniors. The vote opted for them to lose their eligibility even though they did not get to participate in their end of season tournaments. The thought was that the seniors played most of their games and although disappointing, the seniors would not get more eligibility.  There would also have been a problem with teams having too many scholarships. Future freshmen had already committed to schools and most teams’ scholarships amount were full for next season. In the end, there were too many obstacles to allow this to happen. By: Andrew Mercer Photo by: Andrew Mercer A moment in sports that will go down in history as unforgettable is the cancellation of the 2020 March Madness NCAA Basketball Tournament. At first, the plan was to play both the conference tournaments and NCAA tournaments without fans in attendance. However, this quickly started to change for the worse and conference tournaments were being cancelled in the middle of games being played. A few days later the NCAA tournament was cancelled , and the season was ended altogether. Seniors on their respective teams would not get a chance to play in the NCAA tournament and lost their eligibility prematurely.  The decision to cancel the tournaments came shortly after the NBA postponed their season when one player tested positive for the virus. This demonstrates that the NCAA was paying close attention to what the NBA was up to and ultimately decided their outcome of having to completely cancel the season. The NCAA lost a great amount...

The NBA has been looking for ways to incorporate and advertise their league while being unable to play games or hold team practices. The first main event that has come from this pandemic is an NBA 2K tournament played by various players from NBA teams. This tournament was hosted by Ronnie2K and players played online against each other while staying quarantined at home. Another way the NBA is trying to entertain their audience is through an ESPN televised H.O.R.S.E tournament which also featured current and former NBA players.  Currently, the NBA is looking for a way to continue their season which was earlier indefinitely postponed on March 11, 2020. In this series, I will focus on the impact the Corona Virus has had on sports and how the cancellations started and what lead up to those moments.  I will talk about how these organizations will adjust and plan for the future of their leagues. Sports have a big impact and I can’t remember a time where there were no sports in history. We are in uncharted times and sports are in a difficult place along with everyone else. Leagues have been finding ways to adapt and have online events. Some notable leagues that have done this are NBA and NASCAR.  Leagues have been planning financially as well and are figuring out how to compensate their players, employees and everyone within their organizations. By: Elle Barrett On January 22 nd   a Facebook post showed a patient filed by the CDC for what is supposedly a coronavirus vaccine. It suggested that the virus was introduced by the government for pharmacies to profit off of the vaccine. Even though the content of the post did not make sense, the patient actually had SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). SARS is another type of coronavirus that originated in China, killing hundreds of people in 2002 and 2003. Companies have received funding to develop a vaccine for n-Co-V but there are not any vaccines available for any coronaviruses, let alone COVID-19.   We have had 3 coronavirus outbreaks since 2003, so it’s safe to say they’ll become pretty regular from here on out. Some scientists believe a universal coronavirus vaccine needs to be created to protect us from future outbreaks, even the ones we don’t know about yet. By: Elle Barrett On his radio show, Rush Limbaugh made a claim that the coronavirus is being used as a weapon to bring down President Trump. On February 24, Limbaugh proceeded to go on about the coronavirus and how it is just the common cold. He believes the media is trying to use the coronavirus to scare everyone in hopes of the government finding something that will get rid of Trump. Limbaugh compared the situation to the panic and fear America felt when we heard for two years over Russia stealing the election. First of all, COVID-19 is not the common cold. The symptoms are different and COVID-19 has a morality rate of about 2 percent, and the cold does not. By: Elle Barrett Most coronaviruses come from animals and because the theory that COVID-19 originated in China, several people assume the virus came from the Chinese eating bats.  Many videos on social media have gone viral, showing people eating bats or bat soup. However, eating exotic animals in China is less common than we all would think. Starting around 2002-2002, eating exotic animals started to drastically decrease. There is also no evidence that eating bats were the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic.  A large number of those who tested positive for COVID-19 did not have any contact with live animals before they fell ill. Nobody knows where exactly COVID-19 came from, but assuming a virus originated from a country’s eating habits is not only incorrect, but it is also offensive. By: Elle Barrett The government first introduced COVID-19 in 2018 and supposedly Bill Gates is responsible. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation announced in 2019 that the foundation would help fund an unrelated project to do research on livestock disease and immunology.  Gates gave a presentation in 2018 at the Massachusetts Medical Society and New England Journal of Medicine. During his presentation, Gates presented a stimulation suggesting that a flu very similar to the 1918 flu pandemic could kill 50 million people within a six-month period. He also added that the Global Public Health Community did not have the resources to deal with a pandemic. Gates presentation was mainly to argue that governments need to work better with the private sector to create technology to fight a pandemic in the future.
