WotC Sells Out

I have always been a fan of Magic: the Gathering, which is owned by Wizards of the Coast. For a long time, WotC has been pushing for diversity in their products. For instance, the company introduced its first openly trans character in early 2015, Alesha, Who Smiles at Death. In 2017, a card called Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis came out in Commander 2016, the company's first gay, biracial couple.
Unfortunately WotC went back on those ideals for financial gain. Two of the main female characters, Chandra Nalaar and Nissa Revene, were romantically interested in the lore. For several years subtle character building slowly brought them closer together, but when the book War of the Spark: Forsaken came out in November, that whole relationship was retconned out of existence. Even without the crappy writing, the book spit in the face of what the company claimed to care about.
WotC had basically announced:
"You know the romance thing we built for years between these characters? Well, pretend it never happened."
The company got a Netflix deal to make a show about the characters and apparently plan to center the story around Chandra and Jace. China makes up a huge portion of the market and it isn't known for accepting the LGBTQ+ community. They don't admit it, but supposedly, in order to sell internationally, Chandra had to be straight. I lost a lot of respect for the company that day. I wasn't personally invested in the couple, but to have a company as focused on inclusion as WotC pull something like this.. It feels cheap and disappointing.
